Kitchen Courtesan

The Kitchen Courtesan is a one-woman show in San Francisco that creates some of the most spectacular desserts that I have ever had the pleasure of tasting. The chef, Harriett Jernigan, is passionate about her desserts and it comes through with every single bite!

One of the perks of food photography is the ability to sample the plates put in front of the camera (after they've been duly photographed). Unfortunately, it can also gain you several pounds of weight, especially when it comes in the form of desserts. My assistant was the recipient of most of the desserts that were finished being photographed. Considering his silence throughout most of the photoshoot, it was obvious he was enjoying this benefit!

Almost all of these images were taken with a large East-facing bay window and using strobes as fill flash. As the day wore on, we moved to using two strobes and larger softboxes. Unfortunately, we didn't have a food stylist per budget constraints, but I did what I could with what little food stylist techniques I knew. I tried to match the look and feel of her website (via color temperature and layout, etc) as much as possible. The client was extremely pleased with how the photos turned out.

Lemon Scones
These buttery scones are can be eaten by themselves or paired with the Courtesan lemon creme.

Lemon Tart
This dish is primarily the Courtesan lemon creme in a light and flaky tart shell.

Salame di Cioccolato (Chocolate Salami)
This dish was easily my favorite from this amazing chef. This dish combines nuts, chocolate, and butter cookies into a most amazing dish that will have your taste buds screaming in ectasy. She had made five variations: orange, cherry, espresso, and pecan. The images featured here is the pecan and espesso versions.

(Pecan)

(Espresso)
